Ecophysiology of marine phytoplankton

Ecophysiology of marine phytoplankton

This research line focuses on the characterization and study of the variability of physiological parameters in marine phytoplankton (microalgae and cyanobacteria), both under culture conditions and in their natural environment. It complements existing biological oceanography and microalgae biotechnology lines by providing relevant knowledge and information for ecological studies and the search for potential biotechnological applications. Currently, a special emphasis is placed on investigating intra- and interspecific interactions within marine phytoplankton, as well as with bacterioplankton.

Within this line, we analyze parameters such as growth, biological efficiency, and the production of secondary metabolites involved in these interactions. The goal is to uncover their ecological role in the marine environment and lay the groundwork for future potential applications in various fields.
