POCARISA meteorological station

The POCARISA meteorological station was installed in October 2021 on the rooftop of the University Institute for Marine Research building (36º 32’N, 6º 13’W), at the University of Cádiz. This weather station is part of the Endorsed Action Projects for the Improvement of Teaching at the University of Cádiz; Observatorio Ambiental Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz, and Plataforma de Observación Costero Ambiental del Río San Pedro (POCARISA). These projects arose with the intention of creating a physical and digital infrastructure that conveys the importance of oceanographic and meteorological data and the value of its transformation into knowledge in the context of the digital and information age.

The meteorological station enables the continuous monitoring of various environmental parameters thanks to its installed instrumentation. It is equipped with sensors that automatically record: temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, radiation, PAR radiation, and precipitation with high precision. This meteorological data is read and pre-processed by an IQ300 datalogger at a frequency of 10 seconds. The instrumentation and its specifications are detailed below:

Sensor Variables Accuracy Units
Thermohygrometer Temperature

Humidity

+- 0,001

+- 0,05

ºC

%

Pressure Sensor Atmospheric Pressure +- 0,003 hPa
Anemometer Wind Speed +- 0,1 km/h
Wind vane Wind Direction +- 0,4 º
Rain Gauge Precipitation +- 0,002 mm
Radiometer Radiation +- 0,1 W/m2
PAR Radiometer PAR Radiation +- 0,2 µmol/m2

The meteorological station offers a fundamental service for both the university community and the general public. It supports students, allowing their training in in situ data handling techniques, and Teaching and Research Staff (PDI), enhancing teaching and offering a multitude of applications for research across various disciplines. The data is open access, free, and public, so any user can access this information without restrictions.

The station’s records are stored on a server, and users can automatically download daily files with an hourly temporal resolution. Historical Data Database Link: https://widgets.ocean.uca.es/meteodata/

For more information, the manual with instructions for downloading and using the meteorological data is included: POCARISA-INMAR Meteorological Station User Manual.
