Integrated management of coastal areas

This line of research, as its name suggests, encompasses the study of Integrated Coastal Area Management (GIAL), understood as a synonym for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), Manejo Costero Integrado (MCI), or Gestión Integrada de Zonas Costeras (GIZC). It can be understood through the following guiding definition: “… a process legitimized through public policy, with a technical-scientific basis but also considering traditional knowledge, aimed at the administration of common goods and public interests; oriented towards decision-making to obtain the best and most equitable benefit from the services of coastal-marine ecosystems, with special care to conserve natural capital, cultural heritage, and the landscape; while also addressing the risks and threats faced by people, goods, or resources.” Below are some of the descriptors that define the main areas of study within this research line:

  • Integrated planning and management of coastal areas (policies, plans, and programs)
  • Governance and public policy in coastal areas
  • Marine spatial planning
  • Integrated coastal management, public policies, and sustainability in Ibero-America
