Genetics and genomics of marine organisms

This research focuses on the study of fish and mollusks, encompassing the following key aspects: food traceability, karyotype development, characterization of broodstock in aquaculture, species identification, determination of population genetic variability, detection of genetic damage (sperm banks and damage caused by pollutants), physical gene mapping, development of integrated genetic maps, chromosomal evolution, conservation of genetic resources, and gene expression.

To achieve this, various molecular techniques are employed, such as gene cloning and sequencing (Sanger and NGS), as well as optical, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy. Molecular cytogenetics (FISH) and transcriptomics techniques are also performed.

A wide variety of fish and mollusk species have been studied, although current efforts and main results are directed towards the study of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) and the Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata).
