Analysis, behaviour, distribution and effects of contaminants

This line of research encompasses the study of the distribution of microplastics and macroplastics in the ocean, as well as their circulation and accumulation patterns. The aim is to identify the sources of plastics that end up in the sea, their arrival rates, and their accumulation sites. It is known that a considerable percentage of plastics reaching the ocean sink for various reasons, but the amount of submerged plastic is not globally quantified, and its consequences for benthic communities remain unknown.

Based on these premises, the key aspects studied in this line of research include:

  • Distribution of microplastics and macroplastics in the marine environment.
  • Accumulation of plastic in different marine reservoirs and its transfer between them.
  • Effects of plastic waste on marine biota.
