Functional, cellular and molecular biology

This research line focuses on the hormonal and environmental control of key physiological processes, such as development and reproduction, in marine species of aquaculture interest (e.g., sea bass, sole).

We also study phylogenetic relationships in opisthobranch mollusks, enabling taxonomic revisions and the detection of previously undescribed cryptic species. All these studies are conducted from a cellular and molecular perspective, employing advanced techniques like DNA extraction, identification of genes of interest, cloning, gene expression analysis, cell line usage, and in situ hybridization.

Furthermore, we investigate the population genetics of marine organisms using molecular markers to determine population structure, genetic variability, and genetic differentiation, among other aspects. We also assess the genetic variability of fish broodstock through:

  • RFLPs in marker-assisted selection (MAS) programs.
  • Molecular cytogenetics via FISH.
  • Gene localization and mapping in fish and mollusks using FISH and NGS sequencing.
  • The Crassostrea angulata genome project via NGS.
  • Species identification and traceability.
  • Genotoxicity determination.
  • Chromosomal characterization of dinoflagellate species, analyzing the relationship between chromosome number and pathogenicity.
