Behavior of materials in the marine environments

This research line is structured into three main areas, all focused on the interaction of materials with the marine environment:

  • Corrosion in Marine Environments. This sub-line aligns with the strategy to promote marine renewable energy. Its objective is to study the behavior of different materials in marine environments, primarily underwater, and propose solutions to mitigate their deterioration. It’s of particular interest for improving materials used in the offshore industry and oceanographic instrumentation.
  • Archaeometry. This sub-line aligns with the strategy to boost the cultural value of the sea. Its objective is the dating of objects and vestiges from archaeological sites, mainly underwater. It also addresses the characterization of materials found, the determination of their physicochemical properties and the technology used in their manufacture, in addition to proposing stabilization and conservation techniques for these cultural assets.
  • Development of Protective Coatings. This sub-line’s main objective is to propose and optimize new corrosion protection methods with low environmental impact. It is fundamentally based on developing conversion coatings using lanthanide elements and thin films of zirconium oxynitrides.
